Anyone looking for a silver lining, or perhaps just one swallow, will find a crumb of comfort by recalling the 2009 season. Elworth stormed to the top of Championship One and had established a lead of over 60pts at the halfway stage.
The distractions of the Cheshire Cup then contributed to an awful run of results which, had it been across the whole season, might have seen them struggle to avoid relegation. Of course the points already banked gave them a cushion and eventually they scraped together enough to gain promotion.
Now they are in real danger of an immediate return to the lower division but should a similar turnaround in fortunes occur, there is no knowing what might happen.
