The sleeve notes say young Joe used to lie under the piano while his mum practised concert pieces, gazing at sheets of music without understanding them.
It must have rubbed off; he studied philosophy, art history, German studies and music at Graz University, earning several degrees and a doctorate. His thesis was an expansion of a 1907 study of tonality, in which he coined the term “atonality”.
