Jenö Jandó Franz Liszt Historical Hungarian Portraits
This new album from Naxos is devoted to memorialising the dead. Historical Hungarian Portraits dates largely from 1885 and commemorates figures in the country’s recent past, including politicians, a poet and a musician (the full title says it’s part of a complete piano collection and is vol 54).
The title of most pieces is the name of the dead person; it opens with Széchényi István (within Hungary he is still known to many as “the Greatest Hungarian” says Wikipedia); Petöfi Szellemének remembers Sándor Petofi, Hungary’s national poet.
