Mr J Gibbons

The funeral took place on 13th February of Mr Joseph Owen Gibbons, of Congleton, who died on 15th January at Macclesfield District General Hospital, aged 87.
Mr Gibbons was the eldest child born to Mr Owen and Mrs Sarah Gibbons. Born on 9th May, 1932, he grew up and was educated in Manchester, a city he was very proud of and loved being a “Manc”.
He was a time-served engineer and had very fond memories of that field of work.
He had many hobbies; he loved camping and later had a caravan. He loved the outdoor life and the freedom camping gave him. He loved railways, a passion he shared with his father. It had to be steam trains not diesel trains, which he called trams. His favourite was a black five engine. He was a Manchester United fan through and through, supporting the club all his life. It wasn’t a game to him it was a religion.
The biggest passion in his life was bagpipes. He played from a very early age, only giving up when ill health stopped him. He had played with many bands, including Fianna Phadraig for many years when he was younger, and with the South Cheshire Pipe Band in his later years.
His greatest love of all was the love he had for his family. He absolutely adored his family. He was a husband, father, granddad, great-granddad and brother.
Father William Kilkenny conducted the service at St Mary’s RC Church, Congleton, where Mrs Vera Barker was organist for the hymn Abide With Me.
Interment followed at Astbury Church.
