We seem to be reporting on new and ingenious scams every week.
Modern digital communications obviously help the crooks but there are a lot of people out there with decent pensions, and plenty of savings.
Over in the US, researchers at Stanford University have estimated that consumer fraud costs Americans more than $50bn annually.
For a start the crooks have got more sophisticated. Illiterate emails from people with unlikely names and even more unlikely offers (“I have £50m in a bank account and only you dearest can help me get it out”) still go round but far sleeker operators now trawl the oceans of crime.
