Is call for civility just humbug?
Dear Sir, — I agree with Fiona Bruce’s recent letter asking for civility in our political discourse.
Would she then publicly and wholeheartedly condemn prime minister Boris Johnson’s outrageous response in the House of Commons when he was asked by a fellow MP to moderate his language and not to use inflammatory terms such as “surrender bill”, “betrayal” and “traitor” — words that are quoted in daily death threats to MPs.
Mrs Bruce will know that Mr Johnson’s response to this simple, reasonable request was to smirk and call the request “humbug”.
