It’s time to ditch gendered language
Dear Sir, — I put a motion to Alsager Town Council a couple of weeks ago, requesting that the chair at council meetings be referred to as the chair instead of chairman, to avoid the use of gendered language.
I was not able to attend the meeting as I was at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.
I thought that this was something that Alsager Town Council had just not got round to changing; it is 2019 after all. Many organisations, schools and the police for example, have long since adopted gender-neutral terms for their workers, such as headteacher and police officer.
