Memories of past Guy Fawkes nights
Dear Sir, — It was always exciting as bonfire night approached.
Everyone had heard of Guy Fawkes, but who cared what he did — it was going to be a great time.
Every bit of rubbish that was combustible was collected, as well as branches from surrounding woodland. It was all stacked into a pile for the bonfire. Len Lacey’s scrap yard on Lawton Street was a great place to get worn-out tyres that would burn ferociously.
Any bit of spare land was used to build a stack. Some of the stacks were so big that kids would sometimes have a camp inside the bonfire; only gang members could go in.
