Modern slavery a scourge on society
Dear Sir, — At the Cheshire East Council meeting on Thursday, I proposed a motion calling on the council to adopt the Co-operative Party’s Charter Against Modern Slavery.
Modern slavery is a scourge on our society, with people profiting from sexual and criminal exploitation, domestic servitude, and forced labour.
Official statistics compiled by the National Crime Agency show that last year, 5,145 potential victims were submitted to the Government’s national referral mechanism, a 35% increase on 2016.
This is probably the tip of the iceberg — it is estimated that there are around 10-13,000 victims in the UK alone.
