Do you remember that programme, Stars In Their Eyes? Contestants — sometimes “celebrities” — would disappear through a smoky door and re-appear impersonating a famous singer.
The series ran from 1990 to 2006, initially presented by Leslie Crowther and then more famously by Matthew Kelly, although Cat Deeley and Davina McCall had short (forgettable) stints.
It was one of the most successful television shows ever, with 13m viewers for the live finals, which makes mincemeat of the last X-Factor final (5.2m people with nothing better to do).
