Much of this is not Northern’s fault
Dear Sir, — May I correct some of John Sherwood’s assertions (Chronicle 3rd January)?
The increase in rail fares is Government policy, not a train operator’s decision.
Although the fuel duty escalator has been frozen for several years now to be benefit of motorists, the Government still insists on imposing the inflation-rate fares increase every year, notwithstanding the recent poor performance. So passengers continue to fork out.
