The rot set in with Thatcher and Blair
Dear Sir, — I would like to take the opportunity, afforded by your column, to record my own overview of the shattering changes to life in this country, and county of Cheshire, over the last 40 years. It may explain why people of my retirement age voted for Brexit.
I grew up knowing that I lived in one of the most beautiful counties of a green and pleasant land. There was a strong work ethic that prevailed, my parents deservedly retiring at 60 years with pensions funded from the state and employers.
I had a grammar school education and the young working class could aspire to university and the assurance of employment.
