‘Antiquated’ decision to keep ‘chairman’ title
A Labour councillor has described Alsager Town Council’s decision not to move to a gender-neutral title for “chairman” as “antiquated”.
It comes just months after Congleton Town Council voted to replace the “chairman” title with chair.
Coun Jo Dale proposed amending the Alsager authority’s standing orders so that the chairman of the council and the heads of the different committees would be referred to as the “chair”.
Coun Dale’s amendment read: “That we refer to the chairman as chair to avoid the use of gendered language.”
Coun Dale and two of her party colleague’s were unable to attend last Tuesday’s council meeting due to a clash with the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth.
