Music festival will be memorial to Stath
Next year's Alsager Music Festival will dedicated to the life of one of its founders following his sudden death.
Stath Kyrantonis, who died last Wednesday, had been involved in the festival from the beginning more than a decade ago, and not only helped to assemble the stages for the event in Milton Park but also played in Sugar Rush, one of the bands that regularly appeared.
A Just Giving page has been set up in memory of Mr Kyrantonis, with proceeds going towards next year's festival. The original target was £500 but had reached £1,600 by Tuesday. The popular event is usually held in July but had been cancelled this year, long before the coronavirus pandemic, due to rising costs.
Peter Weatherburn, festival chair, said: “Stath had been involved in the festival right from the very start, more than 10 years ago.
“He organised the bands, had contacts for the bands, he was a big figure in the local music scene.”
Mr Kyrantonis appeared regularly on the main stage, performing with Sugar Rush, alongside his good friend John Brindley.
He was a former electronics engineer at ICL in Kidsgrove.
“Stath was the guy who would do all the sound engineering for the festival on the day, Mr Weatherburn said.
”He would set up the all stages including the main stage. He absolutely loved the music festival. It was the best day of the year for him.
“Stath said last year's was the most amazing experience as the crowd was the biggest we've ever had.”
Mr Weatherburn added: “It's just devastating. We feel lost without him. I've spoken to his wife, Marley, and next year's festival will be a memorial to Stath. We will make it a celebration of his life.”
Writing on the Just Giving page set up in his memory, Mr Weatherburn said: “Stath was a wonderful man, who gave so much to the local community. Wherever sound engineering was needed in Alsager, he was there! He helped out at the old folks’ show, Christmas lights switch-on, Round Table bonfire, carnival and, of course, his beloved music festival. So many of you will have seen him at these events, always calm, knowledgeable and friendly. The whole community will miss him hugely!
“For Stath, the best day of the year was Alsager Music Festival. He was there from early morning to last thing at night, making sure the event ran smoothly. His long involvement with the festival meant so much to him and his family and they would like to see any donations go to support this event and its ongoing success.”
Mr Kyrantonis also helped with Alsager's popular Italian Festival.
