Congleton air cadets honour the fallen in cemetery

Air cadets from 230 (Congleton) Squadron Air Training Corps tended to the Commonwealth War Graves at St John the Evangelist Church, Byley, recently, having missed out last year for the first time in two decades due to covid restrictions.

Ten cadets and three staff members took “great pride” in gardening and cleaning the head stones of fallen heroes from four nations during World War II, the youngest of whom was only 19 when he died in action.

Commanding officer Flt Lt Kate Clarke said: “It is of great importance that we continue to remember and respect the brave military personnel who died to protect our freedom.

“Some of the airmen were from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, so their relatives are unable to make the long journey to look after the graves. It is our honour to do so, on their behalf and ensure that their brave memories live on in our younger generation.”
