Church will hold hustings as council blames purdah
Candidates in the upcoming general election have grown increasingly concerned that a hustings will not be held in Congleton.
Wesley Place Methodist Church in Alsager has stepped in instead and has organised a hustings there on Tuesday for candidates in the Congleton constituency.
Congleton Town Council had been considering the possibility of holding a hustings at the town hall, but has now decided against it to avoid the possibility of “giving one political party an advantage over another”.
Richard Walton, branch secretary of the local Labour party, described the news as “a real shame for the people”.
