Drowning fear at mere after lake tragedy
Congleton’s Asbury Mere has been labelled a “ticking time bomb” following the tragedy at Westport Lake, Stoke-on-Trent, where the body of 13-year-old boy was found after a three-day search.
This week, volunteers who maintain the 52ft-deep mere said they had a constant battle to stop people taking a dip after drinking alcohol.
During spells of hot weather in previous summers Astbury Mere Country Park has been plagued by litterbugs and anti-social behaviour.
