Pub that had no alcohol licence is forced to shut
Pub owners were “disgusted” after council bosses, assisted by police, entered the premises and told customers enjoying drinks and meals to leave, as it wasn’t licensed to serve alcohol.
Publicans Paul and Helen Bona took over Ye Olde Kings Arms, on High Street, Congleton, last October, and said they submitted a licensing application then.
After the application was submitted, Mr Bona believed Cheshire East Council, the licensing authority, had accepted it, although he did not receive confirmation.
Council representatives visited the popular hostelry last Wednesday and ordered Mr Bona, who has run pubs for 40 years, to close with immediate effect. The authority later said the owner had not been able to provide any proof that an application was made.
