Congleton Lawn Tennis Club

The club’s first tournament of 2020 took place on Saturday.
The original attempt to stage the February fun tournament was hit by the impact of Storm Dennis, but it was all systems ago two weeks later.
Organiser Lindsay Newton presided over the tournament, which was sponsored by Sweetie Pix.
The competitors had fun as they tried to outwit the windy conditions, but there was no rain.
The two winners of the event were Kim Bennett and Richard Shipton. They were presented with their sweet bombs courtesy of the sponsors.
In team tennis, the spring leagues continue. Congleton A beat Cuddington A 5.5-2.5, while Congleton B beat Nantwich B 5-3. Congleton C went down to a narrow 3.5-4.5 loss against Holmes Chapel A.
The club continues to attract new sponsors for the season and has now partnered with Barre Sculpt, based just opposite the club on Martin’s Court. It has agreed to sponsor the summer U3A tournament and the two winners will each receive a voucher for a free six-week pilates course. The club thanked them for “their generous offer”.
The club’s annual meeting will be held on Monday, 9th March in the clubhouse at 8pm. All members are welcome to attend to hear about the committee’s plans for 2020 and to have their say on these plans.
Coffee morning tennis sessions take place on Mondays and Thursdays each week with an hour of light coaching and doubles play followed by coffee and cake in the clubhouse. The sessions start at 11am.

The club’s ladies’ team captains for 2020 are Jeannette Walker (Ladies A), Sian Willis (Ladies B), Lindsay Newton (Ladies C), Eileen Grigg (Ladies D) and Kerry Hall (Ladies E).
The mixed team captains will be Jeannette Walker (A team) and Mike Massey (B team).
The men’s team’s captains have not yet been finalised.
The club has announced a partnership with The Cheshire Tavern for the 2020 season. The pub has now re-opened and has provided three prizes.
One of these will be used at the 2020 open day. Details of this will follow shortly and anyone signing up to join the club on the day will be entered into a free prize draw to win a three-course meal for two with a bottle of wine courtesy of the Cheshire Tavern.
Radchester’s Garden Ornaments has also agreed to support the club and owner Ester Bradbury visited the club to launch her firm’s sponsorship of the 2020 singles challenge.
The leading lady and man in the competition organised by Nick Wilkins will win a voucher to spend on an ornament of their choice.
