People-pressure has prompted the county council to start work to improve safety on two Biddulph roads.
Staffordshire County Council said that in response to community concerns, work was to begin on Monday (18 May 2026)  on Halls Road and Station Road. It said the work would improve safety for the disabled, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
The county council said it was investing £108,000 in the scheme, which aims to reduce vehicle speeds, improve driver awareness and make it easier to cross the road — particularly for people with mobility needs or visual impairments.
It said it also hoped that more people would be encouraged to walk and cycle “as they will feel safer and more confident”.
The two-week scheme includes traffic-calming features along both Halls Road and Station Road, as well as improved pedestrian crossing points to support safer walking and cycling.
In addition to speed cushions being installed, the Halls Road/Station Road junction will be upgraded to a give-way arrangement, with new illuminated signs and minor kerb build-outs to help manage vehicle movements and improve visibility.
There will also be improved pedestrian crossing points.
The council said the improvements would benefit users of National Cycle Network Route 55 (NCN 55) and Biddulph Valley Way.
A full road closure will be in operation next week. The signed diversion will be along the A527, Mow Lane, Wedgwood Lane and Halls Road, and vice-versa.
During the second week, multi-way traffic signals will be operating, with full closures implemented, if needed, for a short period. Residents will be able to access their properties and access will be available to businesses. There will be pedestrian access at all times.
County Coun Patrick Allen, Cabinet support member for highways, said: “Safety on our roads is a top priority to the county council and by introducing this improvement scheme we have acted directly on community concerns.
“We’re confident that these improvements will not only improve safety but encourage more people to walk and cycle in their town – boosting health and wellbeing and enabling cost effective travel options.
“While this is a relatively short scheme, there will be unavoidable disruption for which we apologise for and would like to thank people for their patience during the works period.”
