‘Secret’ gate sign shows safer route for walkers

One of Goostrey’s best-kept secrets has been highlighted to make it safer for people walking to the village pavilion on Booth Bed Lane.
For many years there has been a pedestrian gate to the playing fields – but because the entrance is set back from the road, villagers are often unaware of it (writes Dave Smith).
Now a new sign has been erected so families walking from the village can see where they can enter the playing fields without the need to risk the busy, narrow lane to the vehicle gate.
Jason Lynch, chairman of the committee that runs the playing field for the benefit of the residents of Goostrey and surrounding villages, said: “We know that some people are put off walking to the playing fields and pavilion because they don’t realise there is a gate nearer to the village.
“Hopefully, the new sign, which is similar to the one at the main entrance, will encourage families to walk to the many sporting facilities. The gate is almost opposite Eaton Lane and so there is a pavement almost all the way.”
Since the all-weather courts were completely refurbished last year, there has been a surge in interest in the playing fields and there are now more sports and activities available to members.
As well as tennis, basketball and five-a-side football, there is also a bowling green, two courts marked out for pickleball and a thriving table tennis club.
Mr Lynch added: “This is a community facility for everyone, and we want people to come and enjoy and hopefully join. New registered users are always welcome, and they can play any of the sports on offer and try out ones they may have not played before.”
