Newcomers are being welcomed to take up a new hobby with a combination of history and fun.
St Mary’s Church Bosley is looking for new people to join its bell ringing team, practising every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9pm.

The team is keen to hear from people of all ages who would like to learn something different and meet new people, while becoming a part of a long‑standing tradition.

St Mary’s Church described bellringing as a “wonderful combination of history, teamwork, concentration and fun” and a hobby that gets people away from the television and computer.

It was explained as a skill that is learned gradually – many people are often surprised to discover there is real skill involved rather than “simply pulling a rope”.

Each church bell is individually controlled by a rope, and the ringers work together to create the familiar church bell sound.

Bellringing is a tradition that has taken place in village life for generations and the sound of bells continues to mark weddings, special occasions, celebrations and important events.

No experience, musical ability or special knowledge is needed before attending a practice session as the team will explain how everything works and introduce people to the bells and let them see what is involved.
