Congleton is once again in full bloom, having won a Gold Medal in the 2025 RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals — marking five consecutive national golds for the town: 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2025.
Representing the North West in this year’s national competition was another honour for Congleton in Bloom, a group formed in 1995 and active in the Bloom movement for three decades.
The 2025 finals brought together 44 Bloom groups from across the UK, with Southport named the overall winner.
RHS judges, who volunteer their time to travel the country each summer, praised Congleton’s “outstanding horticulture, strong community spirit, and creative tributes to local heritage”.
Its nickname as “Beartown”, inspired by the opportune borrowing of the Bible fund to buy a new bear, saw Congleton’s bears — in both floral and statue form — “charm” visitors throughout the tour.
Judges highlighted the town’s “vibrant” hanging baskets, planters, and roundabouts, all “beautifully maintained and bursting with colour”.
Congleton Park was described as the “Jewel in the Crown,” while the flower festival at St Peter’s Church was noted as a “particularly moving” display of community pride and volunteer involvement.
The town’s full calendar of community events and its commitment to biodiversity, especially at Astbury Mere, also earned high praise.
The judges described the presentation on Congleton Hydro as an “inspiring example of sustainability” and expressed hope to see it included in future tours.
Coun Russell Chadwick, a member of the In Bloom team, commented: “Achieving five consecutive Gold Awards from the RHS is a truly outstanding accomplishment for Congleton.
“This remarkable success reflects the town’s exceptional dedication, creativity, and community pride. The stunning floral displays and magnificent roundabouts not only bring daily joy to residents but also catch the eye of every driver passing through our colourful town.
“Congleton’s ongoing commitment to beauty and excellence helps boost local tourism and creates a warm, welcoming impression for all who visit or travel through. Congratulations to everyone involved—a shining example of teamwork and pride that continues to make Congleton bloom and flourish year after year.”
