Pedalling on two wheels was celebrated in all its glory on Sunday during the first Alsager Classic Cycle Ride.
Bike models more than 30 years old were the order of the day and in tandem with the retro theme, cyclist not only donned attire from the days some, of a certain age, will remember of the Milk Race (original Tour of Britain race sponsored by the then Milk Marketing Board) but also arrived in what looked like tweed waist coats and flat caps.
The town’s inaugural classic cycle ride was organised by Alsager Harlequins Cycling Club
Those taking part gathered in the Wilbraham Arms car park on bikes eligible to be ridden if they were more than 30 years old.
Race bikes, touring bikes, mountain bikes, tricycles, Shopper, Choppers, penny farthings or anything else as long as it was human pedal-powered were acceptable.
The classic cycle entry rules stipulated that most eligible bikes “will have a steel frame with shift levers on the down tube and brake cables that pass outside and over the handlebars” and that “pedals should be with toe clips and straps; modern quick release or clip-less pedals are not allowed”.
There were three rides on Sunday of short, medium or long distance and among the prizes given out were those for the best dressed.
Community Recycles Cycles of Crewe supported the event and took along a bike doctor and a selection of classic bikes and parts for sale.
