A cancer patient from Congleton is one of the stars in a new film to promote The Christie, where he was treated.
Sam Elbeik, (68), was diagnosed with bowel cancer following checks at Macclesfield District General Hospital in 2018, where he subsequently underwent surgery.
Mr Elbeik was then referred to The Christie in south Manchester for radiotherapy and found out recently that he was all clear of cancer after five years.
He was one of 14 patients invited to participate in the film project to promote the world famous cancer treatment centre.
The film demonstrates the wide range of services provided by The Christie, how it helps improve the quality of life for cancer patients and the impact this has on them.
During Mr Elbeik’s time at The Christie, he discovered the art room, which he describes as his “sanctuary” in the video.
The art room is open three days a week to patients and is staffed by artist in residence Pat Mountford and volunteers. It provides a relaxed space for patients and carers by helping them discover their creativity when they may feel at their most vulnerable.
No previous art experience is necessary – the sessions are informal, fun and relaxing.
More than 24 clinical and non-clinical staff were also invited to participate in the video to showcase the wide range of ways patients receive care, treatment and support.
During the final sequence in the film, more than 50 staff members declare “We are The Christie” – the film’s title – to demonstrate how the staff work together as one team to make a difference for patients.
The film will be used by Christie staff when they do presentations or attend high-profile conferences and three versions will be available for international audiences, with Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish translations.
Staff joining The Christie for the first time will also watch the uplifting video as part of their corporate induction.
Dr Neil Bayman, the centre’s executive medical director, said: “We want to thank all the patients and staff who participated in our new corporate film. We hope it shows how our staff care for and treat patients and how this makes a huge difference to them.”
