Mick Sveikutis, of Biddulph, recently found out that it was the 75th anniversary of the Festival of Britain and sent in this group photo taken of a Selectus employees at Stoke railway station, while on their way to the festival in 1951. He writes: “The photo was in the collection of my late mother Jean Sveikutis (née Kirkham). Mum is the fifth from the left on the front row. Gustave Senn, the founding managing director of Selectus, is the last man far right on the back row, with glasses and a trilby. Until 2010, when it closed due to financial difficulties, Selectus was a manufacturer of Velcro and ribbons and a major employer in Biddulph. A housing estate now stands where the factory once was. The Festival of Britain was a national exhibition held across the United Kingdom in the summer of 1951 to mark the centenary of the 1851 Great Exhibition. Organised by the post-war Labour government, its primary goal was to lift public spirits during post-war austerity and showcase British achievements in science, technology, architecture, and the arts.”
