First class recognition for Olympian Ann Brightwell

A post box in Congleton has been painted gold to honour one of the town’s Olympians – Ann Brightwell (nee Packer) who won the 800m final at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. Husband Robbie won silver in the men’s relay at the same games.

Postie and town councillor Rob Moreton asked Royal Mail to transform the post box on Swan Bank this year to coincide with the celebrations marking 750 years since Beartown gained its charter.

Pictured with Coun Moreton and Mrs Brightwell is town mayor Coun Denis Murphy, who said: “Ann and Robbie are active members of the town who promote health and wellbeing, so I think it’s a wonderful way to honour her achievements.”
