Planners have granted permission for a new medical receiving unit extension, including an ambulance drop-off point, at Macclesfield Hospital.
The application came from East Cheshire NHS Trust and included amendments to car parking and the internal road layout, and associated landscaping.
A medical receiving unit, abbreviated as MRU, is where patients are received, assessed and triaged before being transferred to the appropriate department for further treatment.
The trust’s aim is to improve the flow through the hospital’s emergency department by redirecting those sent by their GPs or who do not require immediate emergency care through the new unit.
The trust said the MRU extension, ambulance drop-off bay and reconfigured car parking and access road layout would provide health benefits to the local community as well as improving the flow of patients through the hospital’s emergency department by directing less urgent cases through the new unit.
