On Sunday, 18th January, Congleton Golf Club marked the official start of its 2026 season in fine style with a hugely successful captains’ drive-in, attracting one of the largest turnouts seen at the club for many years.
More than 130 members, family and friends gathered to support men’s captain Graham Podmore, lady captain Sue Bailey and junior captain Charlie Barnes, creating a welcoming atmosphere throughout the clubhouse, (ITALICS writes Mike Dines).
The day began with the regular Sunday club competition, shortened to nine holes ahead of the main event. Congratulations went to the winning team of Nick Worrall, Andy Boyd, Paul Bennett and Mike Dines, who set the tone for an enjoyable and sociable day.
The captains’ drive-in is a long-standing golfing tradition, and Congleton’s version did not disappoint.
Using vintage hickory-shafted clubs, each captain was permitted just one practice swing before stepping up to the tee — a daunting task with a sizeable crowd watching, and wagers already placed on the likely distances.
Club president Mike Dines formally welcomed the captains onto the tee before proceedings got underway. First to drive was lady captain Sue Bailey, followed by men’s captain Graham Podmore, with junior captain Charlie Barnes completing the trio.
The results were:
• Sue Bailey: 106 yards
• Graham Podmore: 139 yards
• Charlie Barnes: 180 yards

Hearty
Following the drives, members and guests retired to the clubhouse to enjoy a hearty beef stew, generously provided by the captains. Mr Dines thanked them on behalf of the membership for their hospitality and the warm welcome extended to everyone present.
Short speeches followed, during which the captains announced their chosen charity for 2026 – The Joshua Tree, which supports families affected by childhood cancer. This is a cause that the entire club has pledged to support enthusiastically throughout the year.
The captains also unveiled an exciting and varied programme of social events planned for the year ahead, reinforcing Congleton Golf Club’s commitment to being not just a place to play golf, but a thriving social hub for the local community.
Highlights include tribute nights featuring Robbie Williams, Boy George, Shania Twain, and Whitney Houston; a Valentine’s Thai banquet; a craft beer festival; an Ascot Day celebration; a murder mystery evening; the club’s birthday party, and a sportsman’s evening with former England and Newcastle United footballer Peter Beardsley.
Best wishes went to Sue Bailey, Graham Podmore and Charlie Barnes for a successful and enjoyable year ahead.
For those interested in joining or returning to golf, now is the perfect time to visit the club, enjoy a round, and explore the many benefits of membership.
