An album that does what it sets out to do; Ist Ist have a sound and they stick to it. It is what it is, or maybe it Ist what it Ist.
That sound can be summed up by three words: Sisters of Mercy. Ist Ist don’t have a sonic swagger of SoM but it’s the same sound, deep vocals, solid rhythm section and swirly riffy guitar.
The last album was more typical goth-tinged rock album but this steps it up a notch, possibly more use of synths giving the music greater throb, and more of the wall of sound of the Sisters. There’s vocals and there’s a throb with guitar.
“I Am The Fear” opens and it is indicative of what is to come; not really a standout track, as quality control is as high as the number of killer tracks is low.
Momentum is the wrong word for a machine that rolls along as subtly as a tank, but they keep up the steady pace.
Some songs are slow, such as “Burning”, and some are more anthemic: I can see “The Echo” being an encore song. The albuym gets more reflective twards the end with “Song for Someone” and closer “Ambition” chilled in a wall-of-sound way, and apart grom thevocals could be Coldplay. This is out tomorrow (Friday).
