A permanent purpose-built pavilion for events and spectators would help to “secure the long-term viability” of Sandbach Rugby Club as a “vital community asset”.
The Bradwall Road club has submitted a planning application to Cheshire East Council for what it described as a hospitality space and viewing platform for games.
The pavilion would replace an existing temporary marquee, reducing the impact of noise on neighbouring residents when events were staged.
A statement with the planning application, prepared by Manor Architecture, described Sandbach RUFC as a “thriving community hub” supporting several teams across all age groups, from minis and juniors to senior men’s and women’s squads.
It added: “The club’s success has led to a significant increase in demand for shelter, post-match hospitality, and community gathering space, which the original clubhouse footprint could no longer accommodate.”
While the temporary marquee currently serves as the base for the club’s mini and junior section on Sundays, “it is no longer adequate to meet the safety, welfare and operational standards required for the section, which now accommodates a significant number of children, parents and volunteers each week”.
The aim of the pavilion would be to “consolidate the club’s facilities into a permanent extension that respects the character of the area and will provide a permanent, fit-for-purpose environment, ensuring the club can continue to deliver high-quality youth development in a safe and suitable setting”.
The statement went on to say that replacing the marquee with a permanent extension offers two “distinct planning gains” for Cheshire East Council.
“The current temporary marquee is utilitarian and detracts from the site’s appearance. Its removal and replacement with the proposed permanent extension offers a significant uplift in visual quality.”
The canvas marquee “offers virtually no sound insulation” and the new extension would feature solid walls and double-glazed windows “offering a far superior relationship with neighbouring residential properties compared to the current situation”.
The statement said that the revenue generated from the use of the space was reinvested directly into the maintenance of the pitches, coaching and facilities, “ensuring the club remains financially self-sufficient”.
The application reference on Cheshire East’s planning portal is 25/4709/FUL. The last date for people to comment is Thursday, 8th January.
