The appearance of a crane towering above Congleton War Memorial Hospital has been a sign that work is progressing towards completion of a new community diagnostic centre.

When finished, the range of diagnostic tests and other services available will mean patients can be seen closer to home, will reduce waiting times and improve early detection of various health conditions.

During phase of one the development, part of the hospital site on Canal Street underwent extensive refurbishment.

The crane was there last week for the installation of modular buildings.

The next step in the development is the internal fitting of the diagnostic centre, which is due to be completed by October.

Patient services will include non-obstetric ultrasound, ophthalmology tests, and cardiorespiratory diagnostics.

Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the diagnostic centre will create a “one-stop shop” so that patients can access for multiple diagnostic tests during one visit if necessary.

A spokesperson for East Cheshire NHS Trust, which runs Congleton War Memorial Hospital, said: “The development of the new clinical diagnostic centre at this historic site will ensure that the hospital remains a pivotal part of the community for generations to come.

“East Cheshire NHS Trust would like to say a huge thank you to colleagues at Congleton for their patience in dealing with the ongoing works.”

The hospital celebrated its centenary in 2024 when a number of celebrations were held throughout the year, including a community day in Congleton Park, while on another occasion staff dressed up in similar uniforms nurses would have worn there through the decades.
