Firefighters in three-hour battle with Cloud blaze

Firefighters fought to prevent a blaze on the slopes of The Cloud from spreading in the early hours of Monday.

The large grass fire involved an area of land just beneath the craggy western facing summit of the 343m high hill.

Fire engines from Congleton, Macclesfield, Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Bollington and Poynton along with an Argo cat off road vehicle were called out to Tunstall Road, the nearest access point for the crews, at around 2.20am.

They used hose reels and tools to tackle the blaze, while nearby residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering their homes.

The fire was out by 5.20am and some crews remained at the scene checking for hotspots to make sure it didn’t reignite.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service posted later on Monday: “Firefighters were called to a large fire at The Cloud near Congleton in the early hours of Monday. They worked hard to stop the fire from spreading and remained at the scene for a number of hours.”
