A new CCTV camera is due to be installed at an antisocial behaviour “hotspot” in Alsager, at a cost of nearly £6,000.
The town council unanimously agreed to focus in on Shadow Grove, using funding from Community Infrastructure Levy at a recent full council meeting.
As previously reported, the plan was put forward by Coun Chris Venables after the recommendation came from Cheshire Police.
In a report to members of the town’s Planning, Environment and Community Committee last month, Coun Venables said: “Alsager Town Council currently operates a network of CCTV cameras positioned at strategic locations across the town to support community safety, crime prevention, and reassurance for residents and businesses.
“Shady Grove has been repeatedly identified as an area experiencing incidents of antisocial behaviour.
“Concerns have been raised by residents and have been formally acknowledged by the local police, who have recommended the installation of an additional CCTV camera at this location as a preventative and evidential measure.”
The move follows the installation of three cameras across the town centre in October 2023, which doubled the number of monitoring devices in Alsager.
Describing the quality of the pictures from the cameras at the time, after attending a demonstration at the security hub in Macclesfield, then town clerk Nicola Clarke, said: “They show you how they can see in the dark, how they can zoom in and read the label of your T-shirt to see what make it is”
According to data on the Cheshire Police website, antisocial behaviour was the third highest reported crime in Alsager between February 2025 and January 2026.
The 80 antisocial behaviour incidents made up 11% of the overall crimes reported.
In the report discussed at last month’s Planning, Environment and Community Committee meeting, Coun Venables said: “The use of levy money for infrastructure that enhances community safety is considered appropriate and proportionate.
“No impact on the town council’s revenue budget is anticipated at this stage, subject to confirmation of installation and ongoing service costs from Cheshire East Council.” At the recent full council meeting, members were told the purchase of the camera would cost £500, with an additional £500 for a socket.
Wireless equipment, including installation, would cost £4,105, with an ongoing annual fee of £800.
Members voted unanimously in favour of the new camera.
