Leading medical expert Dr Kathryn Mannix will share an insight into the world of palliative care at King’s School, Macclesfield, next month.
The event will be hosted by BBC broadcaster Nick Robinson between 6.15pm and 8.30pm on Friday, 13th March.
The visit has been organised by East Cheshire Hospice, which is inviting supporters to hear from the best-selling author.
Dr Mannix was a pioneer in palliative medicine, working as a consultant in hospices, hospitals and patients’ homes over three decades. That experience led to her writing two books, “With The End in Mind” and “Listen”, which is about finding the words for tender conversations.
On her website, kathrynmannix.com, she said: “I’ve spent my whole career working alongside dying people and learning from them. Now I want to share their wisdom with the world. I’m doing this by writing books and media articles, guesting on podcasts, lecturing and webcasting.” The conversation between Mr Robinson, a hospice patron, and Dr Mannix aims to be informative and entertaining.
Dr Mannix said: “In a world where we have managed to overcome many challenges using technology and medical advances, there are still some difficult things that just won’t go away.
“We have no cure for death. We’re getting better at postponing it, but sooner or later it comes to us all. So, getting informed and prepared seems a good idea.
“We have no workarounds for daunting conversations. Whether we like it or not, sometimes we have to take a deep breath and get into a conversation that we might have preferred to avoid.” Hospice chief executive Karyn Johnston said: “Kathryn’s mission is simple yet profound – to help us all face mortality with courage, dignity and kindness. It’s a mission that we at East Cheshire Hospice completely support.” The evening ends with a book signing. The venue is The Jackson Hall, King’s School, Alderley Road, Macclesfield, SK10 4SP. Admission is by registration via eastcheshirehospice.org.uk, looking for “an evening with Dr Kathryn Mannix”.
The link will invite guests to make a £20 donation per ticket.
Mr Robinson is from Macclesfield and his late father Robbie was a hospice patient.
