Two snooker icons will chalk up their final re-enactment of an historic moment in sporting history in Congleton at the weekend.
In an event dubbed “The Final Act”, Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor will take the town hall audience back to the 80s and put their infamous encounter at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, in the frame.
In 1985, Dennis the Menace and Steve “Interesting” Davis were competing for what became known as the “black ball final” of the World Snooker Championship.
The match was won by underdog Taylor, who sealed victory by potting the final black in the final frame. The live coverage was viewed by a television audience of 19 million viewers who stayed up past midnight to watch it on BBC2, breaking the record for the most viewed sporting event on the channel.
Both players are ambassadors for Congleton-based award-winning No Tier Snooker, which supports people living with early onset dementia.
The group, which recently won the national young onset award at the UK Dementia Awards as well as the Congleton town mayor’s civic award, meets every Wednesday at Congleton Snooker Club on Royle Street to offer two hours’ respite for members.
The focus is on friendly banter during a few frames while connecting with others with the same condition.
“The Final Act”, which is a sell-out, starts at 2pm on Sunday 14th June.
No Tier Snooker thanked Congleton-based Zest Digital for building its website as well as Chris Hamriding estate agents and Spall Clark solicitors.
