A gent’s outfitters established 121 years ago – in 1904, by Tom Davenport – has had its long service to the town commemorated.

Davenport’s Menswear received a town mayor’s High Street award for long-service to Congleton.

Store manager Bob Clarke accepted the award from the mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley.

The business provides high-quality lifestyle clothing on the ground floor and has an extensive range of formal wear upstairs.

Cllr Wesley said: “Congratulations to all the team at Davenport’s for your long service to Congleton. With four sons, I have shopped many times over the years and the customer service is excellent.

“The building itself is of immense importance as one of the oldest in Congleton, dating back to the 1430s. The exposed timbers and curious shape of the shop just add to its charm and enhance the shopping experience.”

She added: “With these awards we hope to highlight the great shops and business in our town centre and say thank you to them for providing a local service. You don’t have to travel to the nearest city or out-of-town shopping complex to get stylish menswear, it is right here in Congleton.”

Each recognised business will receive a window sticker and certificate highlighting their years of service to the town.

The artwork featured on both has been designed by local resident Kit Perren. Born in Congleton, he has owned a small restoration business in the town for nearly 30 years. With a background in fine arts, he brings a creative touch to both his professional and personal work.

In his spare time, he enjoys sketching and painting scenes that capture Congleton’s rich heritage.

Anyone can nominate a business in Congleton town centre or one of the local parades of shops for an award, provided it has been here for at least five years.

Provide the name of the business, evidence of its start date in Congleton and contact details for the owner or manager (with their permission). Send this information to info@congleton-tc.gov.uk with subject line “High Street Awards”.
