A dedicated fund-raiser has been rewarded for her support of the Poppy Appeal.
Joan Rowley, a resident at Davlyn House Care in Biddulph, helped the home to collect £312.75 for the 2025 Poppy Appeal.
The RBL Biddulph branch’s Sandra Bowler said: “Joan told us she saw the poppy box in the home and noticed that nobody was taking any notice of it.
“She took it upon herself to sit by the box most days and catch people coming in and out. If they said they hadn’t got any change, she told them to make sure they brought some the next time they visited.
“Quite a few people went back out to their cars to search for loose change. One person put a message out on Facebook to say if anyone was visiting the home to make sure they took change for the Poppy Appeal as they wouldn’t get past Joan without putting change in the box!”
Recently, four members of the RBL Biddulph branch went to meet her at the care home and presented her with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Royal British Legion.
Mrs Bowler added: “Joan is certainly a character and was very overwhelmed by the certificate.”
The branch is looking for new members, and volunteers for the 2026 Poppy Appeal. Anyone interested can email biddulphdistrict.secretary@rbl.community.
