Just two finals see 5½ hours of tennis played

More of the club championships have concluded at Congleton Lawn Tennis Club.
After a “lovely” morning of tennis on Saturday 31st and a “really close” match, Louise Fenn and Karen Podmore defeated Celia Whitecross and Paula Norris in the 2024 women’s doubles final – the score being 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, (writes Andrew Giltrap).
Thanks went to sponsors Hightown Fish and Chips.
Both the men’s and women’s over 50 singles have been completed.
For the men, the final saw Ian Oakley beat Russell Finch 6-4, 7-5 in a two-hour match.
Heather Bryson and Louise Goodall played in the women’s final. After a 3½-hour marathon and a record number of deuces, Goodall won out, the score 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. Every point was a battle and it was a thoroughly excellent match.
Mr Oakley and Ms Goodall each win a voucher for The Brownlow Inn, courtesy of sponsor SCA Solar.
The open women’s is underway as a straight knockout with the open men’s event on the 15th as a one-day event.
