Super-skating mum Danielle Bailey and her 10-year-old son Charlie are gearing up for a “wheely” fun challenge in aid of Children in Need — and they are inviting others roll up and join in.
The pair will be leading a 24-hour Skate-a-thon at Biddulph Leisure Centre, featuring jam skaters, games and live DJs to keep the energy high throughout the weekend.
Ms Bailey, who runs Biddulph Leisure Roller Disco, has been skating since the age of three and is passionate about using the sport to bring families together.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete novice, a social skater or a pro — there’s something you can do to help us,” said the 34-year-old.
“Roller disco is something that brings families together, which is why we chose Children in Need. It’s a cause close to our hearts.”
More than 40 skaters have already signed up for the event, which runs from Saturday 8th to Sunday 9th November. Participants can choose to skate for three, six, 12 or the full 24 hours.
“We wanted to set our good skaters a challenge, but also open it up to anyone who wanted to come along,” said Ms Bailey.
“If you don’t want to skate the whole 24 hours, you can book in for shorter sessions.”
Local businesses are lending their support: the Rose and Crown pub in Biddulph is donating buffet food on Saturday, and the Griddle and Grill food van will be on site Sunday to keep skaters fuelled.
Ms Bailey added: “I’m extremely grateful to Biddulph Leisure Centre for letting us use the venue for free. My very first skating session was here, so it’s really special to me.
“Charlie is really excited about doing the challenge with me, so please come along and join us. It’ll be great fun — all while raising money for a good cause.”
The original fundraising target was £2,000, but sponsorship has already surpassed that figure.
“Now our aim is just to raise as much as we possibly can for this great charity,” she said.
Skaters of all abilities are welcome. The event takes place at Biddulph Leisure Centre, Thames Drive, ST8 7HL. Skate hire is £2.50.
