Traffic at standstill after water mains leak

Roads in Congleton have been gridlocked this week after a water main leaked forced the closure of Park Lane.

And it could remain shut to traffic until Sunday.

Traffic was disrupted while United Utilities engineers worked to fix the leak on Tuesday. Long queues formed on roads in and around the town centre. Vehicles were bumper to bumper on Moss Road in both directions on Tuesday evening, while queues could be seen in the Congleton direction again yesterday (morning). Traffic heading into the town centre was also backed up along Canal Street.

The one.network live map of roadworks reported that the road would be closed until Sunday.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Our teams are repairing a leak to a water main on Park Lane, which requires traffic management to allow them to work safely. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
