Close encounter in VP Trophy competition

Sunday was a busy day for members of Congleton Lawn Tennis Club.

All four mixed teams were in action in the morning and both national club league teams were on court in the afternoon.

There was also the 2022 Vice-President’s Trophy in the afternoon, its second staging after it was introduced to the calendar in 2021.

The event was a foursomes-style event with qualifying groups taking place before the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, Margaret Wilshaw and Andrew Giltrap beat Maureen Taylor and Heather Bryson, with Paul Walton and Nick Wilkins defeating Jackie Simpson and Greg Suldecki.

The final was won by Walton and Wilkins in a close encounter, 10-8.

Event organiser Ray Masson thanked Karen Bannister from sponsors Cheshire Posh Platters, who provided the prize vouchers for the winners and all the members who took part in “an enjoyable afternoon of tennis”.

The next tournament is the Town Mayor’s Charity Tournament, which will be sponsored by Voice IP Comms.

The club will also be putting on a platinum jubilee tea on the same afternoon – if anyone would like to volunteer to help out with the tea, they should contact Savitri Macasey or Lindsay Newton.

A quiz night takes place on Friday, 27th May and a pie night on Wednesday, 8th June, thanks to Pickle Pantry Pies, who will be hosting the event. There will be a small charge of £1 per person.
