Congleton’s theatrical calendar is about to get a whole lot gorier and a lot more tuneful when Congleton Musical Theatre unleashes one of the most popular and darkly hilarious musicals of all time, “Little Shop of Horrors”, at the Daneside Theatre from Tuesday 21st to Saturday, 25th October, with performances kicking off each night at 7.30pm.
With a history that stretches back to 1932 (originally as the Congleton Amateur Operatic Society), Congleton Musical Theatre has continually evolved, and its latest choice is no exception — a cult classic written by the legendary duo of Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music), the creative geniuses behind Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast”, and “Aladdin”.
“Little Shop of Horrors” whisks audiences away to a rundown flower shop on Skid Row where the meek floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn, stumbles across a new breed of plant. He names it “Audrey II,” after his co-worker crush, Audrey.
But this isn’t an average potted petunia. Audrey II is a foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore that promises Seymour unending fame and fortune — as long as he keeps it fed. And what does this insatiable botanical wonder crave? Blood.
Over time, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s truly out-of-this-world origins and its terrifying intent towards global domination.
The musical is a blend of sci-fi, horror, comedy, and rock-and-roll, delivering catchy songs and chilling moments in equal measure.
Tickets are available at ticketsource.co.uk (“Daneside Theatre Trust”) or via the Daneside website.
