A newly-developed exercise and nutrition support programme designed specifically for adults on weight-loss meds has been launched in Cheshire East.
The programme provides structured lifestyle support to help participants build sustainable healthy habits, stay nourished, maintain strength and feel confident as they navigate the changes that can accompany medicated-assisted weight-loss.
Co-ordinated by Everybody Health and Leisure, the trust that runs Cheshire East Council’s leisure services, it is the first exercise and nutrition programme available in the borough specifically designed for users of weight loss medication.
Recent guidance from the World Health Organisation highlighted that while weight loss medicines could play a role in supporting adults living with obesity, medication alone was not enough to address the wider challenge.
The 12-week programme includes working with people on a one-to-one basis, through tailored exercise plans, strength-focused training and virtual or in-person nutritional support, delivered by a registered nutritionist.
Participants have full access to exercise classes, swimming and gym facilities at Crewe Lifestyle Centre, Congleton Leisure Centre and Macclesfield Leisure Centre.
The programme is open to adults aged 18+, with a BMI of 30 or above, who are using weight loss medications prescribed by their GP or another appropriately licensed healthcare professional.
Donna Williamson, senior health and well-being manager at Everybody Health and Leisure, said: “It’s vital that we support residents using weight-loss medications by helping them stay active and make healthy food choices, ensuring they can achieve long-term improvements in their well-being.
“We know that weight loss medications can be helpful in treating obesity but long-term success comes from building strong, sustainable healthy habits.
“This innovative programme provides people with the support and confidence they need to feel their best.”
She explained: “Rapid weight loss can lead to significant reduction in muscle mass, up to 40% in some cases, which stresses the important role of regular strength training, achieving 150 minutes of weekly physical activity and maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet.
“Taking this approach helps people protect lean muscle, establish long-term healthy habits that support sustained well-being.”
